SGX and Fei Yue Community Services: Helping to Build a Stronger Society
Now into its 17th year, SGX continues to rally Singapore’s financial community into supporting the country’s underprivileged through its flagship charity initiative, SGX Bull Charge. This year, SGX Bull Charge Charity Run is going virtual, from 30 October to 13 November, and we are rallying people from the financial community, friends and family, both local and international runners to run at their own space and time for a good cause. Our goal is to complete 100,000 kilometres over the 2 weeks period and the distance conquered in the virtual run will form a charging bull, a symbol representative of the financial industry, as we support the needs of the underprivileged and disadvantaged through this selfless act of giving, striving and going the extra mile as one.
Fei Yue Community Services (FYCS) is among the beneficiaries who are hopeful that donors continue to help communities in need through the SGX Bull Charge fundraising events. According to Mr. Leng Chin Fai, Executive Director of Fei Yue Community Services: “SGX Bull Charge Virtual Charity Run is a novel, yet meaningful, initiative to carry on the spirit of charitable giving.” Over the years, part of the proceeds raised from the yearlong SGX Bull Charge fundraising events is channelled to FYCS to fund the Give Skill Give Life! Programme.
Creating Better Communities for the Disadvantaged
|Since pioneering as a counselling service in 1991, Fei Yue has evolved into Fei Yue Community Services (FYCS), providing healthcare, training and research to vulnerable communities.
As of today, FYCS has provided social services to 145,022 families, 68,221 outreach programmes, 144,256 seniors, 4,303 youth-at-risk and 2,767 children. This is possible only through the help of generous individuals who selflessly share their blessings with others.
FYCS has been reaching out to low-income families, children with special needs, prison inmates and their families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, victims of domestic abuse and other disadvantaged individuals. It continually conducts community-based programmes and trainings to empower the underprivileged and aid them in improving their way of living. It also holds inter-generational and transnational programmes that promote family and community cohesion.
Enhancing Skills to Improve Quality of Life
Many people are fortunate enough to ride the waves of success as people become more affluent and society becomes more progressive. However, there are those who are left behind due to unfortunate circumstances and these needy families even struggle to provide decent meals for their family each day and are often left with no choice but to thrust character building and life-improvement endeavours aside. SGX Bull Charge has been funding and supporting the ‘Give Skill, Give Life!’ programme for the last 7 years, which aims to not only provide basic needs to low-income and underprivileged families but also equip them with essential life skills that they can use to improve the quality of their lives, as well as strengthen their family ties.
The Give Skill Give Life! programme has helped equipped parents with new knowledge and life skills to improve their family life; allowed low-income seniors to attend a variety of courses such as self-defence tactics to protect themselves and scam awareness through Crime Prevention talks; imparting financial literacy and recycling knowledge to seniors that are highly relevant to their everyday lives. This programme also provided guidance and support to targeted inmates on where to get relevant community resources, and aims to give them confidence to reintegrate back to the community with relevant “know-hows” and skills in engaging people in the society.
SGX and FYCS: Strengthening Family Ties for a Stronger Society
One of the advocacies of FYCS is forging strong family ties, which is fundamental in building a more united society. As such, they also strive to inculcate the spirit of giving in the community. According to Mr. Leng Chin Fai, they believe that when a group or community comes together to care for each other and to strive for a common cause, there would be more resources and better coordination. He further expressed his thoughts on harnessing the power of the collective spirit. Through the altruistic hearts of private individuals and corporate organisations, FYCS has been able to allocate funds for their various programmes.
Aside from providing financial aid, SGX is also committed to raise social awareness and empathy through volunteerism. Staff from SGX regularly holds activities to reach out and engage with the families in vulnerable communities. Our annual Seasons of Giving outreach activity for FYCS has grown over the years and in July this year, SGX staff volunteers packed and distributed over 1,100 goodie bags for the low-income families across 8 Fei Yue Senior Activity Centres. Our other outreach activities include soccer clinics, participation in our annual Charity Futsal competition, outings to Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Flyer, Youth Flying Club, and Kids Day at SGX offices. Not forgetting the seniors, our staff volunteers hold activities to celebrate holidays and festivals and spend time with the elderly at the various Fei Yue Seniors Activity Centre.
